A Belgian identity card

The Belgian government has announced it will replace its current Belgian id card with a biometric one.

The document will contain a unique digital code linked to a person’s facial recognition data. This way, authorities will be able to verify identities quickly and easily without having to ask for additional documents(Identity Documents).

The new system will be rolled out gradually over the next few months.

In addition, Belgium will introduce a national database containing information about every citizen.

This includes names, dates of birth, addresses, and fingerprints.

The database will be used to help prevent Belgian citizens from committing crimes.

As well as helping police, the database could also make it easier for employers to check whether someone is eligible for work and residence documents.

Belgian id card

National identity cards are issued by the Ministry of Justice in order to prove identity. They can be used to access public services such as schools, hospitals, or banks by Belgian citizens.

They are usually made up of two parts: an identification part (front) and a security part (back). The front contains personal details, including name, date of birth, address, and photograph. It must be laminated so that it cannot be removed.

The back contains a hologram which is scanned when the card is presented at a service point. If the scan matches the information on the card, then the user is granted access.

A new type of  is being introduced after filling the application form called “Smart Cards.” These have been developed by the European Commission and are already available in some countries and being obtained card in person.

Card description

These cards are similar to normal Belgian ID Card, but they include a chip and similar to a credit card. When the identity card holder presents their card, the chip is scanned using a special reader.

The chip holds all the same information as on a standard ID card, but it is protected by encryption technology.

This means that only authorised personnel can read the data stored on the card.

The chip also allows the Belgian citizens to use online banking services.

Security features

All Belgian ID Cards have a holographic image printed on them. This makes it difficult for anyone else to copy the card.

However, the image is not water-resistant and can therefore become damaged if the card is exposed to moisture.

To protect against this problem, the Belgian government has started issuing ID cards with a plastic cover to Belgian citizens.

This protects the image from damage caused by rain or snow.
